SACRAMENTO - The Sacramento Business Journal named CAHF Controller Tonja Fontes as CFO of the Year during a public award recognition ceremony in Sacramento. She captured the award in the Small Nonprofit/Public Agency category.

Fontes, who joined CAHF in 2004, was credited with stabilizing the association when it was undergoing a period of financial instability – and achieving success without raising membership dues. She was selected from a field of regional candidates who competed for the honor.

“Tonja has played a critical role in guiding this organization during an unprecedented economic downturn. Under her leadership, CAHF has received consistent, unqualified audit opinions during our past six annual audits,” said Jim Gomez, CAHF CEO/President. “Our members have benefitted greatly from her talent and financial expertise.”

Fontes is responsible for financial oversight of CAHF, a 501(c) (6) trade association, and the allied 501(c) (3) educational foundation, the Quality Care Health Foundation. As the chief financial officer, her duties include budgeting and forecasting, tax preparation, internal auditing, managing investments and supervising personnel. She serves as the organization’s human resources liaison, and oversees building operations. As California’s largest association of long-term and post-acute care providers, CAHF represents a diverse group of caregivers who support people across the health care continuum. CAHF’s more than 1,300 member facilities represent for-profit, not-for-profit and government operated facilities in the state.

Award winners were names in four other categories including small private company, medium private company, large private company and large nonprofit/public agency. A profile of Fontes and the other award winners will be available in a special supplement in the July 26, 2013 edition of the Sacramento Business Journal.
