Armed Intruder and Active Shooter in an LTC Facility

This session will provide an overview of the options that need to be considered when planning, preparing and responding to the "The Unthinkable;" an armed intruder or active shooter in a long-term care facility.  The importance of preparedness and the utilization of a concept known as the "Four Outs" will be presented in this straightforward presentation on the harsh realities of these types of violent incidents that can impact providers that serve a vulnerable population.

Caring for the Caregivers
Stan Szpytek, Life Safety Consultant / President, CAHF / Fire and Life Safety, Inc. • Lisa Sweet, RN, Co-founder, National Association of Health Care Assistants
Drawing on her experience from the Joplin, Missouri tornado in 2011, Lisa Sweet discusses the importance of mental and emotional health. She describes the years following the tornadic event that claimed 161 lives, including 16 from a nursing home where she worked through that night trying to find residents and staff. Diagnosed with PTSD, Lisa recounts her journey to acceptance and healing. Most importantly Lisa parallels her journey to the experiences caregivers have faced through the COVID pandemic and other situations, including the risk to their mental and emotional health. To that end, Lisa outlines the importance of the intentional effort caregivers must take to maintain their mental and emotional well-being and identifies free and anonymous resources for assistance.

Connect Consulting Services will show you how to design and conduct a tabletop or a functional exercise for the Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill for your organization to practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" to test your earthquake emergency plans. Participating in the Shakeout Earthquake Drill will also aid you in meeting the CMS Emergency Preparedness Exercise Compliance Requirements for long-term care agencies. Lastly, we will provide you with tools and strategies to write your Great Shakeout Earthquake After Action Report and Improvement Plan that will allow you to evaluate your exercise lessons learned and earthquake emergency plan areas of Improvement.
