Statement on CNN Investigative Report on Sexual Assaults in Skilled Nursing Homes

SACRAMENTO -  The following is a statement from the California Association of Health Facilities in response to the CNN investigative report on sexual assaults in America's skilled nursing homes.

The CNN reports of abuse are appalling and deeply troubling.  It is despicable that anyone would prey on the elderly and most vulnerable in our country. Any person who commits these heinous acts should be penalized to the fullest extent of the law.

The safety of the residents and patients in our skilled nursing care centers is our number one priority. We remain committed to preventing any incidents of abuse and support laws and regulations that seek to prevent such abhorrent behavior.

Additionally:     

All nursing home employees in California are required to undergo criminal background checks.

All facilities must providing ongoing training on issues related to abuse  

All facilities must provide resident, families and staff information on how and where to report concerns, incidents and grievances without fear of retribution.
