CDPH Recommendations for Pertussis California continues to experience an epidemic of pertussis. Through July 27, 2010 - 2,174 cases have been reported in the state, a six-fold increase from the same period last year when 349 cases were reported. Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly contagious bacterial illness spread by coughs and sneezes. People sick with pertussis have severe coughing attacks that can last for months.
